IST Statement in Support of Meera Joshi's Nomination to be FMCSA Administrator
The Institute for Safer Trucking strongly supports the nomination of Meera Joshi to serve as Administrator of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).
As Deputy Administrator, Ms. Joshi has been a thoughtful leader of the agency responsible for truck safety in the United States. She has proven that she is committed to engaging all stakeholders, which includes truck crash survivors and the families of those killed in large truck crashes. We appreciate the time she took to talk with our volunteers on our monthly support call and look forward to her participating in the future as Administrator.
We also appreciate Ms. Joshi’s commitment to using data to improve safety throughout the trucking industry. In the past, the FMCSA has had issues with several safety solutions that require reliable data collection and analysis to function properly, including the drug and alcohol clearing house. Given her experience, we are confident Ms. Joshi is the right person to lead the Agency to producing better results on this front.
In 2019, there were 5,005 people killed in large truck crashes, a 36 percent increase since 2010. This unacceptable uptick in truck crash fatalities demands action, which is why the Committee should waste no time in confirming Meera Joshi as the next Administrator of the FMCSA.
